Baked Chick?

Last night at 10:30pm we went to the post office in town and picked up a batch of 27 fluffy chicks.

The time has come to replace the old flock; they're eating almost as many eggs as we are.

But the chicks weren't supposed to arrive until today, so I wasn't quite prepared for them. Our old heat lamp bulb blew out! How on earth to keep baby chicks warm all night??

Remember that little trick about raising bread? Well, it works great for an emergency brooder, as well.

Oh I remember when we had chicks .. back in the day.. they always came in on Sundays.. they post office won't keep them over night so we always had to go pick them up..

Hope they all survive for you..

I guess hatcheries ship their orders overnight on Saturdays? In a way I guess it's good 'cause we're always home on Sundays, but it's still a little strange to go to the back entrance of the post office, ring the bell, and take a package of cheepers home :).
Oh, but they're so cute!!

So, what kind??? That just cracks me up! Were they still in the box when they were in the oven?

Let's see... 3 Black Australorps, 3 Black Stars, 6 Barred Rocks, 4 Buff Orpingtons, 4 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 6 Araucans, and 1 free rare chick (I think it's a White Polish Crested).

Yes, they were definitely in a box in the oven :-D -- don't want to bake up stray feathers and other unsavory chicken sheddings the next time I make cookies :).

Happy to report they're under a heat lamp (and out of my kitchen!) now.

Why not? They were in a box, the oven door was open, and the light was on :). Kept 'em warm through the night!
