Black Fast

Today is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Discalced Carmelite nuns everywhere are starting the "black fast." From now until Easter they will eat no milk, eggs, cheese, or butter (they already don't eat meat, ever... like not even on Easter). Their breakfast will consist of bread and coffee. Lunch is the only real meal of the day with fruits, vegetables, bread, and then they have a simple supper of vegetables and soup.

That's intense.

I, meanwhile, was planning on making a "feast" for dinner tonight.

Maybe we don't have to put the whole stick of butter on the french bread.

Wow! That sure is intense! Even for someone who doesn't care for meat, I'm not sure I could subsist on coffee and toast first thing in the morning (or fruit and veggies as a "main meal"!) Of course I guess Nuns don't have the appetite of a pregnant lady, though...

Your post made me miss the Carmelites!
